History and Retired Heroes

The best known Marshal was A.G. Stitt. Pop Stitt was the highest paid town employee with an income of $75 a month in 1912. For his salary he had to keep the streets clear of wandering cattle, plow the sidewalks, reprimand kids riding their bikes on the sidewalks, enforce the 15 mph speed limit on Colfax, and check doors at businesses at night. Pop Stitt first patrolled on a lady’s bicycle which he learned to ride on-the-job.
